Gabions is made of double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh, as per ASTM A97597.Gabions are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects. Gabion Boxes are wire containers made of hexagonal wire nettings.Wire diameter varies with the hexagonal nettings.

Gabions are environment friendly and cost effective comparing with other options. The advantages of cost and the fact that gabion box can withstand the bad environment for very long time have made the use widespread.

The gabion is divided into cells by diaphragms positioned at approximately 3 ft (0.9 m) centers. To reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter.
